A weekend in Seattle
-Scandinavian food and American Basketball
Fabien is busy cooking... and while enjoying the nice aromas spreading from the kitchen I thought I'd write a few lines and tell you about our weekend...waking up on Sat
urday morning there was no rental car, no hotel reservation and no big plans... but the sun was shining and there're still many of the Seattle pages in the Lonely planet that's unexplored... so we packed our bagpack, unlocked our bikes and headed off... first stop was Fremont, a colorful Seattle
neighbourhood which proudly declares itself center of the universe... a funny place, full of neat cafes, restaurants and stores... as well as with a strange collection of statues and artifacts - a Lenin, a rocket and a giant Troll grabbing a Volkswagen... the latter is hiding under a highway bridge, at the end of Troll avenue :-) ...we continued along the Lake Washington Canal - passing the locks and the "see-through" salmon stairs... no salmon just yet though, just a lost little swimming something who did its best staring back at all the tourists staring in.... next along the path was Ballard - the neighbourhood where many of the Scandinavian settlers arriving here some hundred years ago ended up... and they were many! Every other person you talk to have a scandina
vian sounding name... and if you ask them, they'll gladly tell you about their grandparents from Mora, Stavanger or Östersund... Well, back to Ballard and Olsen's Scandinavian Foods.... it's quite a strange feeling to walk in through their door, leaving Subway and the street filled with
oversized American cars behind you... to find the shelves filled with Toro's "Fiskesuppe", Ekströms "Nyponsoppa"and Vasa... to see jars with "Lingonsylt" and cubes of Brunost... the best of Scandinavia in only a few squaremeters.... even the prices were Norwegian....
We continued north along the coast, parked our bikes and strolled along the beach in Golden Gardens Park... enjoying a "Dumle-kola", the white sails and the colorfull kites filling up the sound....
Dinner's ready.... and it smell's really good!!!
